TL;DR

Say Hey Bakery replaced the tin for its Chinese New Year butterfly cookies with a straight tuck carton in matte white card, printed CMYK in a retro Hong Kong style, then carried the same look onto two lid-and-base rigid gift boxes. From 100 pieces.

THE CLIENT

This is a typical custom bakery carton box project. Say Hey Bakery is one of Hong Kong's best-loved local bakeries; it made its name with mini custard mooncakes and keeps reinventing Hong Kong-style baking. For Chinese New Year it wanted its butterfly cookies out of the traditional tin and into a box that looks unmistakably local, and the same look later had to carry onto its gift boxes.

PACKAGING DECISIONS

Choosing bakery packaging: what we chose, and why

01

Custom straight tuck carton: a printed paper box instead of the tin

Why

Tins are heavy, take up shelf and storage space before they are filled, and cost the same whether the design is good or not. A straight tuck carton in matte white card ships and stores flat, folds up in seconds, and every face can be printed in CMYK. The money moves from the metal to the artwork.

For your product

If your seasonal product sits in a stock tin or plastic tub, a printed folding carton is usually lighter, cheaper and more on-brand. Keep an inner bag or individual wrapping for freshness; the carton carries the shape and the brand.

02

Retro Hong Kong design: florals, traditional patterns and calligraphy

Why

Orange with flowers gives the box a retro, heartfelt feel for the New Year, and the centre panel uses traditional Hong Kong patterns with Chinese calligraphy. The "Made in Hong Kong" badge, with the bakery's own 靚港產貨 seal, says local before anyone reads a word.

For your product

Build a few fixed elements, such as a badge, a colour and an illustration style, and reuse them on every pack. Seasonal boxes can then change freely while customers still recognise the brand.

03

Custom lid-and-base rigid box: peach roses and a Cantonese romanisation badge

Why

For a gift box the bakery moved up to a rigid lid-and-base box. The lid is covered in peach roses with a raised-looking centre panel, and the badge now spells 香港製造 in Cantonese romanisation under each character. A rigid box is kept after the cookies are gone, so the brand stays in the customer's home.

For your product

If the gift box is meant to be kept, spend on the structure and a full-wrap illustration rather than extra finishes. The same badge from your everyday cartons ties the premium box back to the brand.

04

A white and red rigid box that plays on the brand name

Why

The second rigid box is cream with fine red line art and a bold red side band. The front reads 日求三餐 夜求四喜 ("three meals by day, Say Hey by night") around the 四喜 seal, and one side carries 好事成四, a twist on the saying for good things coming in pairs. Two colours, and the jokes do the rest.

For your product

A two-colour design printed well can look more premium than full colour. If your brand name lends itself to wordplay, the sides of the box are a free place for it.

THE RESULT

One bakery, three boxes, one look: the New Year tuck box first, then two rigid gift boxes in the same retro Hong Kong style.

QUESTIONS

Does a paper box protect cookies as well as a tin?+

A carton holds the shape and stops crushing in a bag, but it does not seal against air like a tin. Keep the cookies in a sealed inner bag or individually wrapped, and the carton does the rest while costing less and shipping flat.

Straight tuck carton or auto-lock bottom?+

A straight tuck carton closes with a flap at each end and suits light products such as cookies. An auto-lock bottom snaps into place when the box is opened, holds heavier contents and packs faster on a busy production day. Both are priced on the product pages.

How do I keep different boxes looking like one brand?+

Fix a few elements and reuse them on every pack: a badge or logo lock-up, two or three brand colours and one illustration style. The structure and season can change; those elements stay. Send us your existing packs and we keep them consistent.
