Chung Wah Kee custom food gift box: turning handmade noodles into a gift people want to give

THE CLIENT

This is a typical custom food gift box project. Chung Wah Kee has made noodles by hand since 1979, first from a street stall, then as a wholesaler to restaurants. When machine-made noodles took over the wholesale market, founder Mr Chung decided to sell raw noodles straight to the public as gifts, under the 港食主義 (Hong Kong Foodism) retail brand. Nobody was packaging raw noodles that way. Here is how the packaging was decided.

Custom rigid lid-and-base box: a gift has to feel like one

Why

Raw noodles are cheap and shapeless. A greyboard rigid box gives the set weight and a firm lid-lift, which is what makes someone comfortable handing it over as a gift. Pantone red wrap paper and a foil-stamped stamp logo say "Hong Kong keepsake" before anyone reads a word.

Divided insert design: eight noodle nests and a jar arrive tidy

Why

Noodle nests crush and a jar rolls. One cell per item keeps everything in place in transit, and it makes the set readable at a glance: eight noodles, one sauce, a clear price point.

Custom handle carton: a milk-carton style box for the everyday pack

Why

Not every sale is a gift. For the shop counter the pack had to be cheaper than a rigid box, carry-able without a paper bag, and still look like the brand. A folding carton with a rope handle costs a fraction of the rigid box, and its four upright faces carry the hand-drawn street illustration, so it stands on the counter like a little shophouse.

For your product

If customers buy and carry on the spot, a handle carton replaces "box plus bag". Bakeries, tea shops and delis use it for the same reason. We quote custom structures like this from your dimensions.

One visual system, so both packs and every season read as one brand

Why

The stamp logo with 始於一九七九年, the street illustration and matte white card as the base paper are the whole system. Pantone red on the rigid box, CMYK on the carton, and a pink New Year edition later: different boxes, same brand.

For your product

Fix three things first: a logo mark, one illustration or pattern, one base paper. Then any box type or festive colour you add later still belongs to the family.

THE RESULT

After the first run, Chung Wah Kee used the same system for a New Year edition: pink wrap paper and a noodle illustration, box structure and insert unchanged.
