A Little Happiness custom pastry gift box: one palmier box that changes with the season without a reprint

THE CLIENT

This is a typical custom bakery gift box project. A Little Happiness opened in 2017 as Hong Kong's first pudding speciality shop; its owl mascot is stamped on every pudding. When the brand added palmiers as a gift line, the packaging had to carry the same idea, "a small but certain happiness", in a simple, natural, Japanese-leaning style, and it had to work for Christmas, New Year and everyday gifting without three separate boxes. The brand's own reasoning was simple: every festival should feel new, but the shop did not want to open a new box each season. Here is what was decided.

Choosing gift box packaging: what we chose, and why

Custom sleeve (belly band): a printed sleeve over a plain box, so only the sleeve changes each season

Why

The box and tin stay plain and reusable. All the brand and seasonal artwork sits on a sleeve that slides over them. A Christmas sleeve, a New Year sleeve and the everyday sleeve share one box, so a seasonal edition is a short print run of sleeves, not a new box. A die-cut owl window in the sleeve shows the card inside.

For your product

If you sell the same product in several seasons or flavours, put the change on a sleeve. One box dieline, several sleeves, far less stock and cost.

Textured white card with foil stamping: the natural, Japanese feel

Why

Athens-textured white card has a soft linen-like surface that reads as paper and craft rather than gloss. Gold foil on top of the texture gives the logo and the thin frame lines their lift, so the sleeve needs very little printed colour to feel considered.

For your product

Texture plus one foil colour is the cheapest way to look premium on a small run: the paper does the work, and foil replaces a second print colour. Ask for swatches before deciding.

Custom drawer carton: a divided tray for the palmiers

Why

Palmiers are brittle and oily, so each one is sleeved and sits in its own cell of a yellow tray. The drawer structure gives the slow pull-out reveal that suits a gift, and the tray keeps the pastries from sliding into each other in the bag.

For your product

Cookies, mooncakes, chocolates and anything fragile in pieces: a drawer carton with a cell tray is the standard answer, from 100 pieces with the tray cut to your product.

A punch hole and an owl-shaped card, so the packaging becomes a keepsake

Why

The brand's owl is the whole personality, so it had to be touchable. A punch hole in the sleeve takes a laser-engraved wooden owl tag with a blessing (大吉, 平安健康, 賀正) on gold string, and the message card is die-cut in the owl shape, with To and From lines. The tag outlives the pastries.

For your product

One small physical extra, a die-cut card, a tag, a sticker seal in your mascot's shape, does more for word of mouth than a second print colour. Punch holes and shaped cards are cut with the same dieline as the box.
