Christmas and Lunar New Year are the two seasons when a gift box does the most work for a brand, and in Hong Kong they arrive six weeks apart. If this is your first festive box, the hardest part is not the design, it is the calendar: sampling, paper stock, assembly and delivery all compete for the same few weeks. This guide counts back from the real dates, 25 December 2026 and 6 February 2027, and shares what we usually suggest for each.
Below: the timeline, what works for Christmas, what works for Lunar New Year, how one box can serve both, the box styles compared for gifting, where the budget goes, and how we can help before you order. If anything is unclear, just ask us.
Four dates worth writing down
- 25 Dec 2026 · Christmas
- Gifting starts in early December, so boxes should be with you by then.
- Mid-November · Christmas artwork
- Production is 12–14 days after approval, plus delivery.
- 6 Feb 2027 · Lunar New Year
- Gifting starts two to three weeks before; aim to have boxes by mid-January.
- Mid-December · New Year artwork
- The weeks before the holiday are the busiest for factories and couriers.
These are the dates we work to from our own experience; every product page also shows its reference production time.
The timeline, counted back from each date
We find it easiest to plan a festive box in five steps and give each one a week on the calendar: settle the structure and quantity, see a sample, approve the artwork, produce, deliver. The table shows where those steps usually land for Christmas 2026 and Lunar New Year 2027. It is a comfortable schedule rather than the last possible one; starting later is often still possible, with fewer choices of paper and finish.

| Step | Christmas 2026 | Lunar New Year 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Structure, size and quantity settled | Early to mid-October | Early November |
| White or printed sample in hand | Late October | Late November |
| Artwork approved | By mid-November | By mid-December |
| Production, 12–14 days | Second half of November | Second half of December |
| Boxes delivered | Early December | By mid-January |
Our usual schedule, from experience. Inserts, specialty paper and foil add a few days; an advent calendar or a multi-part set needs a month more at the front.
Tip: Doing both seasons? Settle both designs in October and print them in one run; it saves a second set-up and a second wait.
Christmas gift boxes: two routes we see most
The first is the brand set: a box the customer keeps. MISEL's Christmas box is a magnetic book-style rigid box in navy book paper with gold foil and a gold tray inside, no printing at all; the colour comes from the paper and the shine from the foil. Dark wrap with foil is the Christmas look that ages best, and it photographs well for social media.
The second is the corporate gift: something a company sends to clients and staff by the hundred. Intel and Dell used a natural kraft mailer box with a single black print: two logos, a hand-lettered greeting and line drawings, nothing else. One colour on kraft keeps the unit price sensible at that quantity, and the box still opens like a present.
If you would like something in between, a drawer or lid-and-base folding carton in a dark card with a small foil logo gives much of the premium feel at carton cost. For a bigger launch, an advent calendar turns one gift into fourteen small openings.

Tip: A greeting printed on the inside of the lid, or a small card slot, saves writing hundreds of cards by hand.
Lunar New Year gift boxes: red, gold, and what goes inside
Red and gold do most of the talking, and they do not have to mean foil. Baking Ratios' Year of the Rabbit box is a drawer rigid box printed in CMYK: red, gold tones, calligraphy and a white rabbit, with the brand and reorder details on the box itself. 2027 is the Year of the Goat, and a small zodiac touch is enough; the box should still look like your brand.
What goes inside decides the structure more than the season does. 港食主義's New Year box holds eight noodle nests and a jar of sauce in a divided insert, so everything arrives tidy and the box opens to a full spread. For cookies and pastries, a divided tray or paper cups in a tuck box or drawer box keep things from breaking. Send us one of each item and we will size the insert from them.
A folding carton can be every bit as festive. 四喜麵包西餅's butterfly cookie box is a straight tuck carton in orange with florals and a Made in Hong Kong badge: it ships flat, costs a fraction of a rigid box, and still looks like a gift on the table.

Tip: A printed best-before space and a reorder QR code on the box save a sticker on every unit and bring customers back after the holiday.
One box, two seasons: sleeves, stickers and tags
Because the two seasons sit so close, the smartest festive buy is often a neutral box with two printed sleeves. 小確幸's palmier box is a plain textured white box with foil; for Christmas the sleeve and a small tree tag change, for the New Year the sleeve changes again, and the box, the tray and the dieline stay the same. Two sleeves print in one run, and whatever is left over is still usable next year.
Stickers do the same job at an even smaller scale: a round seal in red and gold or green and gold over the same plain box. Tissue paper in a seasonal colour inside the box, and a paper bag outside, finish the set without a second box.

Which box for a gift: six structures compared
For gifting, the opening matters as much as the outside. Here is how we usually describe the six structures brands pick from, with a rough sense of cost from lowest to highest. Every one of them can be sized to your product and printed from 100 pieces.

| Structure | The gift moment | Good for | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kraft mailer, one colour | Flips open like a parcel | Corporate gifts by the hundred, anything shipped | Lowest |
| Straight tuck carton | Simple, ships flat | Cookies, small food gifts | Low |
| Drawer folding carton | A slide-out reveal | Pastries, chocolate, small sets | Low to mid |
| Lid-and-base rigid box | Lift the lid, see everything | Food sets, beauty sets, New Year hampers | Mid to high |
| Drawer rigid box | Slow pull, solid feel | Premium cookies, jewellery, perfume | High |
| Magnetic book box | Opens like a book, clicks shut | Brand Christmas sets, skincare, tech | Highest |
Relative cost only; the real price depends on size, quantity, paper and finish, and every product page shows it as you type. A paper bag suits any of them if the gift leaves a shop by hand.
Where the budget goes, and what to skip
In our experience five things move the price of a festive box more than anything else. Quantity first: the set-up is the same for 100 or 1,000, so ordering both seasons together, or the festive run with your everyday boxes, brings the unit price down. Then the structure, rigid against carton. Then the finish: foil, embossing and specialty paper each add a step. Then the insert, which is worth keeping when the items move. And size: staying inside a standard sheet size wastes less paper.
What we would gently suggest not skipping: a sample before the full run, and a little extra quantity. A white sample takes 3–7 days and catches a tight insert or a lid that does not sit right; a printed sample takes 7–10 days if the colour matters. And ordering 10% more than the list saves a second, rushed run when a few more names come up in December.

Tip: Foil only where it shows: a logo on the lid, not a pattern over every face.
Before you order: how we can help
Tell us the season, the quantity and what goes in, and we will suggest a structure and a schedule in one reply. Send us one of each item and we will measure them, lay out the insert and size the box around them, free of charge. Once the structure and size are confirmed, the dieline comes with the formal quote, so your designer can place the festive artwork straight onto it.
Paper swatches are free if you would like to feel a dark wrap or a textured card first, and a white dummy of your own box can be made before the full run. If the dates in the table are already behind you, still ask: there is usually a simpler route that lands in time.

Festive gift box questions
When should I order Christmas gift boxes for 2026?+
From our experience, have the artwork approved by mid-November: production takes 12–14 days after approval, and most brands start gifting in early December. That means settling the box style and quantity in October, so there is time for a sample first. Later is still possible, with fewer options.
When should I order Lunar New Year gift boxes for 2027?+
Lunar New Year 2027 falls on 6 February. Gifting usually starts two to three weeks before, and the weeks right before the holiday are the busiest for factories and couriers, so we suggest having the boxes in hand by mid-January. Counting back, that is artwork approved by mid-December and the structure settled in November.
What is the minimum for corporate Christmas gift boxes?+
Most of our box styles start at 100 pieces, including the kraft mailer box many companies use for staff and client gifts. A one-colour print on kraft keeps the unit price low at that quantity; a rigid box costs more per piece but is the one people keep.
Can you make a Christmas advent calendar box?+
Yes. We made a 14-compartment advent calendar for MISEL: a double-door cover with a foil logo, and one small numbered box in each compartment. It is a bigger project than a single box, so it is worth starting in September or early October for a December launch.
Does a Lunar New Year box need gold foil?+
Not necessarily. Baking Ratios' New Year box is red and gold printed in CMYK with calligraphy and a rabbit, no foil at all, and it reads as festive. Foil adds a real shine on a dark or textured wrap; on a bright red box, good artwork often does the job on its own.
Can one box serve both Christmas and Lunar New Year?+
Yes, and it is often the smartest buy. Keep the box neutral and print two sleeves, or two sticker sets, one for each season. 小確幸 does this with a plain palmier box: the sleeve and a small tag change, the box does not. Both sleeves can be printed in one run.
How do I keep a festive gift box affordable?+
The levers that matter most: quantity, so order both seasons together; a drawer or lid-and-base folding carton instead of a rigid box when the box is not kept; one-colour print on kraft; a standard size so the sheet is used well; and foil only where it shows. An insert is worth keeping if the items move.
Can you size the insert from our products?+
Yes. Send us one of each item and we measure them, lay out the compartments and size the box around them, free of charge. The dieline comes with the formal quote, so your designer can place the festive artwork straight onto it.
